Il successo di “Pong” portò Nolan all’idea di creare una console innovativa, con caratteristiche avanzate, che riproducesse non solo i videogiochi arcade ma anche nuove avventure.
Il nuovo hardware venne sviluppato a partire dal 1975 con il nome di “Stella”: il sistema si basava sul processore MOS 6507 e sul processore grafico Television Interface Adaptor, sviluppato appositamente da Jay Miner.
Intanto la Fairchild Semiconductor nel 1976 rilasciò la sua VES (Video Entertainment System), la prima console ad utilizzare le cartucce.
A causa di una mancanza di risorse per battere sul tempo la concorrenza, Bushell decise di vendere la Atari alla Warner Communication che accelerò così lo sviluppo della nuova console, presentata ufficialmente nel 1977 con il nome di Video Computer System (VCS).
Il successo
Il prezzo di vendita iniziale dell’Atari VCS era di 199 dollari, la confezione conteneva la macchina, 2 joystick, 2 paddle e il gioco “Combat”.
Le vendite della console iniziarono a salire nel 1978, grazie al rilascio di nuovi giochi, ed esplosero nel 1979 quando l’Atari VCS iniziò a registrare numeri da record.
In particolare a contribuire al successo della console di Bushell fu il rilascio delle conversioni di famosi giochi arcade, come “Space Invaders“, che spinsero così l’Atari 2600 a dominare totalmente il mercato fino a farle registrare nel 1982 un fatturato di 5 milioni di dollari.
A nulla servì nemmeno la Mattel Intellivision, rilasciata nel 1979, che anche se tecnicamente era superiore alla Atari aveva però un parco giochi inferiore.
Nel 1982 l’Atari ribattezzò l’Atari VCS come Atari 2600, e contemporaneamente presentò la versione successiva della sua console: l’Atari 5200.
La crisi
Il declino iniziò proprio nel 1982 quando debuttò una nuova console, ColecoVision di Coleco, e la concorrenza divenne sempre più spietata.
La Atari inizialmente continuò a vendere grazie alla grande quantità di videogiochi a disposizione, ma la scarsa qualità e la tecnologia obsoleta nel 1983, anno della crisi dei videogiochi, portarono gli acquirenti a restituire le cartucce chiedendo il rimborso del prezzo d’acquisto.
Così’ la Atari registrò un passivo di 536 milioni di dollari che spinse la Warner a smembrare la società.
La divisione console in particolare fu venduta a Jack Tramiel, ex fondatore di Commodore International, e fu ribattezzata Atari Corporation.
L’Atari 2600 venne declassata a console di fascia bassa e il suo prezzo scese a 40/50 dollari.
Proprio nell’anno della sua crisi, ironia dal destino, la console Atari veniva promossa in Italia con il celebre spot pubblicitario dal claim “Atari, Magari!”
La console più longeva
Per contenere i costi di produzione nel 1986 l’Atari 2600 fu riprogettata con un contenitore più compatto, un prezzo di vendita di 50 dollari e il nome Atari 2600 Jr.
Nonostante il calo del picco di vendite l’Atari 2600 Jr continuò a essere prodotta fuori dagli Stati Uniti fino al 1991, ben 14 anni dopo il lancio, divenendo una delle console più longeve in assoluto.
In tutto per l’Atari 2600 furono realizzati più di 550 giochi e vennero vendute oltre i 120 milioni di cartucce.
